Madison, Jillian, Damn You, Autocorrect!
I discovered the site damnyouautocorrect.com a few weeks ago and was almost literally ROFLOLing, as the kids say (sort of). It was the kind of laughter that is surely therapeutic--abdominal-crunching, urinary-mishap-inducing. Looking for more of the same, I downloaded the book version of the site to my Kindle. Like the site, Damn You, Autocorrect! features screen shots of texted conversations that have gone embarrassingly awry because someone's smartphone autocorrected their text inappropriately. For example:
> whatcha up to?
< Nothin, just cleaning mom's vagina for thanksgiving.
> hahaahaahh WHAT????
< Agh! I tried to type china. Auto-correct fail!
< Bad visual
> yeah I think she can handle the other thing on her own.
The book includes 300 texted conversations, most of which have not previously appeared on the web site. Some of them are very funny, but my impression is that the percentage of laugh-out-loud autocorrect faux pas that are really good is lower in the book than on the web site. Or maybe it's just that there are a lot more examples to paw through on the site than in the book, so the success rate on the site seems higher. At any rate, I'd say that the book is not a necessary read. If you're a web savvy digital ager, stick with the web site. If, on the other hand, you want to buy a gift for someone who is digitally challenged, then picking up a copy of Damn You, Autocorrect! makes good sense.
Hahaha. I'll take your advice and skip the book, but I'm headed over to that website right away! We love auto correct on our computers but hate it on our phones! I'm sure it contributed to the o_O emoticon creation!
