Finder, Joseph: Buried Secrets [AUDIO BOOK]
This is the first audio book I've finished. Hearing the book rather than reading it was a very new experience for me, and I feel a bit uneasy about reviewing the book because of this. I don't think I noticed the same things that I would have when reading, and I don't have a history of audio books to compare it to. Nonetheless.... Buried Secrets is Joseph Finder's second book featuring Nick Heller, ex-Special Forces guy turned private spy. I read the first in the series, Vanished, and had some issues with credibility. I had no such problems this time out. Nick is asked by an old friend, his mother's old boss, to find his daughter, who's gone missing. She's only been gone overnight when the book opens, but there's reason to suspect foul play. Marshall Marcus is a very rich man, so kidnapping for ransom is a possibility, but he's also recently gotten himself involved with some very nasty people. Nick gets to work, using brains and brawn and the considerable skill sets of his employees and associates. The story is gripping, exciting enough to get me hooked on audio as a companion for my outside walks. However good the story, though, I'm sure it could have been ruined by an ineffective narrator. But Holter Graham does a great job with the book, seamlessly switching from one accented character to the next, distinguishing the voices perfectly so that following dialogue was unproblematic. Listening to him was a great experience.
